At the beginning of the COVID-19 self isolation in March I came across an article about the Apocalypse Tapestry that hangs in the city of Angers. Commissioned in the late 14th century, the 90 different scenes tell the story of the Book of Revelation, the Bible’s last gasp of horror, retribution and redemption. It was made after war and pestilence had killed millions in medieval Europe.
Seven centuries later in the isolation of my studio I couldn’t help but think of the women that had spent years stitching these pieces.
With a limited pallet and large sheets of paper I started to draw. As I work I am constantly trying to suppress and ignore my anxiety over my new COVID-19 reality.
